Flush Mount outlet parts: back box, mud ring, outlet and face plate

Flush Mount outlet parts

Our patent flush mount outlets can easily be installed during new builds or remodels with these four parts:

  1. Back box
Nails to the stud during framing, like a regular electrical box.
  2. Mud ring
Snaps into the box after drywall. The holes give the mud something to grip so the wall doesn’t crack.
  3. Outlet
A standard Decora outlet. The kit includes a black one.
  4. Face plate
Snaps into the mud ring flat with the wall. A notch at the bottom lets you pop it off for service.

Flush Mount outlet FAQs

What is a recessed outlet?

A recessed outlet sits flush on the wall instead having a wall plate like regular outlets. The goal is to hide the outlet by making it blend in with the decor.

How do you install an invisible outlet?

There are four steps to install a flat outlet. Mount the box to the wood during framing and then drywall. From there, add a ring, mud and sand like usual and then add the face plate which you can paint or wallpaper to match the wall.

How do you install a recessed outlet box?

Install the outlet box during framing by nailing it to the wood. From there, you can drywall like normal.

Can you replace an outlet with a flush mount outlet?

Yes, you can replace a normal outlet with a flush mount outlet if you are removing drywall.

How do you hide a recessed outlet?

The benefit of a flush mount outlet is it is already hidden. Once you paint it or wallpaper over it, the outlet truly blends into the wall.

What walls does a recessed outlet work with?

The recessed outlet kit is made for drywall. If you have tile, stone, brick, or wood, the surface mount outlet kit installs on top of the surface instead of cutting into it.

What comes in the kit?

The single gang kit comes with a box with metal plates and screws, a mud ring, a face plate, a black outlet, two outlet plugs, and a mud plug. The double gang kit comes with the same parts sized for two outlets, including two black outlets and four outlet plugs.

What kind of outlet does it fit?

It fits a standard Decora outlet. The kit includes a black one, so you don’t need to buy an outlet separately.

Can I paint or wallpaper the face plate?

Yes. You can spray paint the face plate along with the wall or wallpaper over it. You can also faux paint it to match wood, granite, or any other finish.

Will the drywall crack around the outlet?

The mud ring has holes that give the mud something to grip, which keeps the wall from cracking around the outlet.

How do I get to the outlet if it needs service?

The face plate has a notch at the bottom, so you can pop it off whenever you need to work on the outlet.

What’s the difference between single gang and double gang?

The single gang kit gives you one outlet with two plugs for $79. The double gang kit gives you two outlets side by side with four plugs for $99.
